Nominated for the German Design Award

Nominated for the German Design Award

The committees of the German Design Council have nominated the toy wheel loader from goki-nature for the German Design Award 2016 – Excellent Product Design.

The German Design Council was established as a foundation on the initiative of the German Bundestag in 1953.

Design and function must be a sensory experience for children

The wheel loader is part of an extensive series of natural wooden toys from the brand series "goki nature". Nearly 30 cm long, the vehicle is fully functional and steerable and is made of solid wood from sustainable forestry.

The wheel loader is manufactured to a large extent by hand in Europe. It is an extremely stable toy and also impresses with its high constructional safety.

The wheel loader also meets high aesthetic demands. Designer Silvia Mathwig designed the wheel loader for goki. "Design is the art of combining style and functionality. For children's toys that means making products a sensory experience," says Mathwig about her work as a designer in the toy company.

The Design Council is the German authority for design language in branded products

"This prize is worth being won by the best; it honours innovative products as well as their manufacturers and designers who are pioneers in the German and international design landscape", is how the German Design Council describes the German Design Award.

The German Design Award is presented by the German Design Council, the German brand and design authority. Its mandate is to represent the German design scene. It was established as a foundation for this purpose in 1953 on the initiative of the German Bundestag.  The German Design Council is one of the world's leading competence centres for communication and brand management in the field of design.

The winner of the German Design Award is decided by an independent jury of international experts.

goki nature: 100 percent naturalness

The goki nature series stands for extremely high quality and natural woods. Its pleasant feel conveys a sense of warmth, security and absolute naturalness.

The series deliberately dispenses with dyes and colours. The functionally aesthetic design of the natural toys is also intended to foster children's creativity and imagination.

The series already includes a large number of other toys. In 2013, the 200 Building Blocks were awarded the Golden Rocking Horse as Toy of the Year in the category "For artists and builders".

Gollnest & Kiesel

Gollnest & Kiesel KG is Europe's innovative manufacturer of wooden toys and the largest toy company in northern Germany. Its brands HEIMESS (baby toys made of wood and high-quality plastic, made in Germany), goki, HOLZTIGER  and ANKER Stone Building Sets are well known in the toy and gift trade. The company was founded 34 years ago by its two owners. The HEIMESS brand has existed for over nearly 60 years, and ANKER Steinbaukasten GmbH in Rudolstadt can trace its history back over 130 years. More than 2,000 different products form one of the most widely varied ranges anywhere in the toy industry.

"We produce toys for children's hands, heads and souls," says Gerhard Gollnest. Over 600 Gollnest & Kiesel employees worldwide are busy transforming a thousand new ideas into a thousand living colours.

In 2015, the company won first place in a large retail trade survey conducted by the industry information service "markt intern", making it the number one toymaker. Impressive first places were achieved above all in commercially central disciplines.

Gollnest & Kiesel places a very special emphasis on forestation. "Whoever takes something from nature must give something back to it," says Fritz-Rüdiger Kiesel. Every year, Gollnest & Kiesel donates a new forest to Germany's least wooded state, Schleswig-Holstein. A tree is planted for every newborn child in the northernmost federal state. In this way, 300,000 new beech, maple and oak trees have been planted over the past ten years.
